If the engine is raw water cooled, then it is very likely that both failures happened at the same time. I would ask if the shop did a full pressure test after replacing the manifolds. Otherwise, they were relying on simple visual inspection and had no way of really knowing if there was damage to the heads, or even the block itself. As they are already pushing back, I would engage an attorney and be sure to document the exact time line as you described. My guess is the shop knows they took a short cut and sometimes a letter from a law office is all that it takes to get them to do the right thing. It would seem the shop never did a comprehensive test ride, let alone a pressure test to validate both their diagnosis and subsequent repair. Just remember that small claims is not an equity court, so you cant go after them for lost time, legal fees, or anything other than the cost of the repairs. The second thing you need to ask yourself is if you want this shop doing the additional repairs if the decision goes your way, which I feel it will. W. NOT to be installed by the companies who lied TOGETHER to screw you. Your insurance company should request that to have it repaired correctly.
